The Emerald Battle Kingdom Field Journal

Gaming setup lit in purple neon

We tear into RPGs frame by frame, chase down indie gems before the algorithm finds them, and write reviews you can actually trust — no scores bought with early keys, ever.

How the sausage is made

From launch build to published verdict

  1. 01

    Hands-on hours

We commit a minimum of 20 hours per title before a single word ships — main story, side content and multiplayer where it matters.

  2. 02

    Capture & notes

Every session is recorded on a 4K capture rig so screenshots, frame-time graphs and quotes come straight from our own footage.

  3. 03

    Second opinion

A second writer plays the disputed sections so a verdict never rests on one person's reflexes or one person's taste.

  4. 04

    Publish & revisit

We publish, then return after major patches to update the verdict — a broken launch doesn't get to define a game forever.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Editorial & trust

Do you accept free review keys or paid coverage? +

We accept review keys because that's how embargoes work, but a free copy never buys a score. Anything sponsored is labelled "Paid" at the top of the article, and we've turned down deals that asked us to soften a verdict.

How are your scores decided? +

Two writers play each game to completion and agree on a score out of ten, with a written rationale. We don't average sub-scores or use half points — one number, one clear argument behind it.

Contributing & membership

Can I pitch a guest article? +

Absolutely — we pay A$180 per accepted feature and love hearing from WA-based writers. Send a two-paragraph pitch through the contact form below and we usually reply within a week.

What does membership actually get me? +

Membership from A$6/month removes the newsletter cadence limit, unlocks the full WA Scene Report archive, and gets you into our monthly Discord game nights. Every article on the public blog stays free forever.
